His participation in this culture, his employment of its language, and the excesses of his descriptions and picaresque narrations of extreme violence, murder, traveling freak-shows and circuses, simultaneously corrupt and condemn, seduce and repulse, incorporate and differentiate diverse groups of people separated through class, race, sex, gender, cultural normativities, economics and experience.

While set in the South and about the South, this is not simply a southern poem. It is, perhaps, the truest American epic we have.
